ADHD: Coco's Favorite Russell Barkley Videos

Dr. Russell Barkley is one of the world’s top researchers and advocates for ADHD. He has published some of the best books for professionals and the general public. His Taking Charge of Adult ADHD is the #1 ADHD book I’m always recommending to folks.

Per community requests, here are some of my favorite Barkley videos on YouTube. Many of these videos have given me a much greater understanding of my ADHD, what it means to live with this disorder, and how to better manage it to ensure a healthier, happier, life.

What You Need to Know about ADHD

Great overview of how ADHD works and what the problems are for the individual and their functioning.

Beautiful explanation of some of the major difficulties of attention and concentration for folks with ADHD, including time perception problems.

Discussing some of the brain-based emotional difficulties for folks with ADHD with a really concrete explanation for the how and why of these issues.

This is the Barkley video about the emotional and mood symptoms of ADHD where I just cry my eyeballs out every. single. time (the lack of irony is not lost on me when I, being a woman with ADHD, am crying over a video about ADHD and emotions). Also, this is a really astute description of differentiating comorbid disorders (meaning separate co-occurring disorders) vs causal disorders where one makes the second happen.

How ADHD causes problems in relationships. Great way of looking at how those emotional difficulties as well as other symptoms cause problems with family, friends, and loved ones.

Addressing Common Myths

The following videos are on my Other Resources page, but they are some of the best Barkley videos for dispelling common misconceptions about ADHD.

Dispels the myth that ADHD is all fun and games. It is NOT just a cute or funny idiosyncratic way of being different.

This is one of the most important videos I’ve watched from Barkley. He, with profound empathy and compassion, speaks to how ADHD impacts functioning. I cried. I cried a lot.

Treatment & Accommodation Recommendations

Lots of concrete, broken down strategies that you can apply across the board for ADHD management. Also, discusses how there isn’t a cure, but what benefits we can expect to see with what types of interventions and treatment. Lots more details in his Taking Charge of Adult ADHD book.

Overview of ADHD medication types and how they work.

Hope these videos are useful, but I honestly recommend you to search for “Russell Barkley ADHD” on YouTube and just dive in. Almost anything he has done is fantastic, super well-researched, and yet understandable with tons of practical tools. He has numerous multi-hour long seminar talks, shorter clips, and more. Highly recommended!

Bonus Sillies

As a woman with ADHD, I found this video quite amusing. I couldn’t relate to all of it, but it puts a smile on my face and reminds me that I’m not the only one who has a brain like this and it is ok to laugh sometimes about how we function.
